Culture and Civilization of English-Speaking Countries

This subject teaches you about the history and traditions of the Anglo-Saxon countries. I think all of the teachers that have to teach English should learn this subject because it can help us to understand the context of some phrases or some word names. In addition, as all of us are traveling to England to improve our English fluently, we need to know something about this country. The assessment of this subject consists of the marks of presentations about England, USA, and Australia and some summaries of some text that explain the origin of this language. Furthermore we have to attend to the lesson every day because it counts too. The teacher is Lydia and she is always trying to give us new information and new ways to understand the culture and the origin of the language. She tries to speak in English throughout the lessons, but sometimes we can’t understand what she is saying because we don’t know some words of old English. I recommend this subject because it can improve your comprehension about English speakers and improve your spoken English.

I strongly recommend to you this subject, particularly if you are specialising as an English teacher, because it is going to give you the knowledge of the origins, history and customs of English countries. The course is divided in two parts, the first one is about the UK and the second one is about America, Australia and New Zealand, each one takes two months each; and the teacher follows the same structure in the lessons, the first part of the class she makes a very brief summary of the previous class, gives you new information and finally she tries to assure herself that everything is understood by playing a DVD with the given information. So attendance is required, but I think it is much better to attend than not, because you learn every day, even if you are studying another speciality. For this reason there isn’t a compulsory exam, you have a pass just attending to class, although if you want a higher mark you can take a final exam. In contrast, I have to recognise that you have to work very hard during the term, because you have to prepare two presentations, one for each part of the course. To sum up, I think it’s going to be helpful to understand much better the usage of the language and the pronunciation, which came from the ancient invasions.

I totally agree with this Blog. It must be Specialist as an English teacher. Teachers should be Perfect in their Subjects. It is really necessary for English Speaking countries.
